vRA 7– Allocating resources to Business Group – Reservations and Reservation policies

In vRealize Automation VMs can only be deployed on reservations. Now before business groups can provision VMs, fabric administrator has to create one or multiple reservations and assign to business group. There is also one more component called Reservations policies, you can compare them to vSphere tags, they allow you to categorize and group multiple reservations. For example if you have more than 1 gold tier reservation, you can created single Gold Tier reservation policy and assign it to all your Gold Tier reservations.

vRA (vCAC) provides two types of reservation policies, compute reservation (or just Reservation Policy) and storage reservation. As the name suggest they are for compute cluster resources and storage respectively.

Recently my colleague come up with requirement in which vRA had 3 business groups and in vCenter had only two clusters so how to provide all business groups access to resources? Fortunately vRA provides this out of the box using reservations and reservation policy. To achieve this requirement need create 3 reservations on same cluster and assign reservation policies to group all reservations for individual business group.

Lets try to digest the requirement through diagram

In following diagram we created three business groups named 1. Sales Business Group 2. Marketing Business Group 3. Finance Business Group. We also created 6 reservations 2 reservations per business group (As we have 2 physical clusters) and finally we created 3 reservation policies to group reservations for particular business group.

Now you can configure reservation policy directly on you blueprint that way VMs can be deployed against respective business group.
